Being a country teacher has given me a clear picture of what living in the country really is like. Despite the fact that, at first sight, country people mayappear to be more relaxed and happier than people living in the city, it may not be the real picture. Probably this is due to the fact that they live under harder conditions.
Still, countrypeople would not trade places with the typical always-in-a-hurry man or woman from a city. They are not simply rushing from place to place to get on time. The administration of time issubject to the rising and setting of the sun. In addition, they are more in contact with nature, something that is really enviable if you have pale apartment brought up children. Although allthis is true “not all that glitters is gold”: most country people live there not because they have chosen to, but because they simply cannot afford the choice.
Most of those who work and livein farms are employees who do not even earn enough money to afford many of the things we take for granted. Sometimes living conditions are harder and far from being ideal if you think thattraffic jams can be stressing, try thinking of going to school every morning on your horse in the middle of winter time! Or pumping for water every time you need to cook or bathe or washyour clothes. Furthermore, they have no easy access to hospitals or shops or entertainment. Distances are longer so forget about doing some last minute shopping. Instead they have to plan aheadwhat goods they will need for the rest of the week or even the whole month!
Not many people would like to live in the country if they knew how things are really like but perhaps if theydid spend some time there it would help them appreciate life’s small things. We should try to stop complaining trivial things and start seeing the glass half full instead of half empty.
