Conquest did not mean effective occupancy everywhere. The Spanish Colonial had an unincorporated frontier, neither the Spanish language nor the modern republican governments have fully establishedthemselves, though the church has penetrated farther than other European institutions brought over by the conquerors.

THE MESTIZO
* The child of a European father and an Indian mother, is themost important by-product of the Spanish conquest.
* This child of Europe and America has taken over the leadership of Latin America.
* While Argentina, Uruguay, and central Chile areclassified as white, the important European immigration to these countries came after the middle of the nineteenth century.
* The colonial governments, the Spaniards, and the criollos treated the mestizoas an inferior human being, described him as undependable, as possessing the bad characteristics of the Spaniard and Indian, as lazy, a vagabond, unstable and untrustyworthy.

THE NEGRO
* Ofthe 12,000,000 or more Negroes transported by slave traders to the Western Hemisphere between 1500 and 1850, a large proportion went to what are now the Latin American nations.
* In those regionswhere the Indians dissapeared shortly after European conquest, Negro labor was used.
* The Negro survived and prospered best in tropical parts of America, largely the coastal lowlands.
* As alaborer he was employed mainly in the cultivation of sugar, cocoa, and other crops that do well in warm moist climates.
* Although they were slaves, they were treated in some ways as superior tothe Indian.
* Unlike the Indian, who was proved extremely recalcitrant, the Negro was malleable and culturally receptive. He acquired European language, religion, dress, food, and habits withsurprising speed.
* The Negroes has become a significant influence in the economic, political and especially in the cultural life. But the Indians has not become culturally European.
