Desperate Dan is a wild west character in the British comic The Dandy. He first appeared in its first issue, dated 4December 1937. He is apparently the world's strongest man, able to lift a cow with one hand. Even his beard is so tough he has to shave with a blowtorch. Originally created as a parody of Superman, he first appeared in 1942 in a theatrical animated short titled The Mouse of Tomorrow. The originalname of the character was Super Mouse, but it was soon changed to Mighty Mouse when Paul Terry learned that another character with the same name was being published in comic books. Super Mouse appearedbriefly in the Marvel Comics interpretation of the character and was nicknamed Terry the First, as he was the first version of the character.
