Genocide

In 1944 a new word was coined. “Genocide” means the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group. Since the prefix “geno” means “race” of “birth” in Greek, it is hard to see how the neologism of 1944 applies to political or cultural groups.Furthermore, genocide has been recently redefined as, any of the following acts committed with intent todestroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group: killing members of the group, causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part, measures intended to prevent births within the group; forcibly transferring children of the group toanother group. With this updated definition it is easy to see, genocide is considered one of the most severe crimes against humanity. It means the deliberate attempt to destroy a national, ethnic, racial or religious group. Additionally, many organizations of the world have their own opinions on how to define genocide; however, they all describe the same unethical, non-moral, conduct of one group ontoanother. One of the most powerful groups as stated previous is the, “Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide”, who accordingly has stated precautionary alerts in which it will be the judge of, 1. Get an international peacekeeping force into East Timor, 2. Get aid to the refugees and the displaced, 3. Get a special session of the U.N. Commission on Human Rights convenedin Geneva, 4. Get a U.N. Commission of Inquiry appointed to investigate the atrocities, 5. Get a criminal tribunal created to try those who committed crimes against humanity. As described in class, ethics is a philosophical branchy of morality, in effect, making them both equal but different. When contrasting genocide to moral principles, it is easy to see that there are many contradictions, forexample, it would be of unmoral judgment to prosecute someone for a crime in which they had not committed based on their skin color. In retrospect, since ethics is the philosophical counter-part to morals, it would also be unethical to pass the same judgment as described.

After researching legal documents that stand for human rights, it can also be seen that exist many implications whengenocide arises. For example, in the United States of America, all one has to do is read the readily available Declaration of Independence. As stated in the beginning of the Declaration of Independence, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit ofHappiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shallseem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.” This paragraph taken form the Declaration of Independence may only correspond to a single country; however it has broad reaching effects that can be seen the joint mentality of the United Nations, which represents a much larger entity, that is comprised of many countries. In fact, many organizations have come together to prevent war crimesassociated to genocide. A key example of this is, “The International Campaign to End Genocide”, which has four goals that are as follows, 1.Theprovision of public information on the nature of genocide and creation of the political will to prevent and end it, 2.
