The Duality of Man
Men are neither born inherently evil nor do they become evil, but rather they give in to their animal nature, whether it is intentionally or unintentionally. For what is to be evil?  The lion feels no pity for killing a gazelle. Likewise, when giving in to our savage nature what seems evil is just a natural animal like reaction. We are born as egocentric creatures andhave a thirst for power; yet this is not being evil but rather being born with the ability to survive. Our only problem is our capacity to rationalize, and to form abstract thought. It makes us thrive and be at the top of the food chain. Thus we place ourselves higher and apart from animals. We fail to see that we are not better though, we still kill others and each other, we wage war, we arerationalizing animals.
Despite its complexity, the belief of the duality of man is that there are two fundamental aspects to life. These aspects vary, depending on what angle you are looking from. The central idea is that we are twofold and that for one way of behavior there is an equal and opposite, a yin to a yang. This in part is due to our rationalizing capabilities which allow for us towork as teams in order to advance. One could say that due to our lack of adaptation in order to survive we developed our rational mind. It allows for us to make solutions to problems, build tools, and work as a team in order to attain food and protection. From this our civilized, good, prosperous side sprouts.
Then comes our savage side, this part of us is brought out by conflict within ourown species or when facing danger by one’s self. Just like animals, humans engage in battles with each other to settle disputes. Now here we have the classical good versus evil, when in reality we have two men/women fighting for what they believe in, each trying to advance or to gain something. The only difference is that one has the support of many while the other does not. Now you can guess whichone is going to be deemed the evil doer. This is how we have the sprout of an opposition to the majority usually seen as incorrect, evil, opposing, and dark.
In the tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, after witnessing all of the events in the novel, we confront the theory of a dual human nature. Only after we witness Hyde's crimes and his eventual overshadowing of Dr. Jekyll does the novelforce us to ponder upon the properties of this duality. To consider each of its episodes as we formulate theories. In the novel Jekyll forms the idea that the soul is a battleground between an angel and a demon. He states that "Man is not truly one, but truly two," and in an attempt to separate both to attain a purified version of each, he creates a potion which causes Hyde to emerge. Once unleashed,Hyde takes over Jekyll's body, until the later seizes to be. While this is a plausible theory, and among the most popular do to the fact that this was Jekyll's reasoning, the author, Robert Stevenson, leaves speculation open to the reader. He does state that there is a duality engraved within the theme of the story yet he does not specify what this duality's aspects are.
While the above theoryis favored, it is challenged by the question: What happened to the angel? If Mr. Hyde was Jekyll’s evil side, why was there no good counterpart that surged from the potions effects? This leads to the development of a new theory, which is that, the story focuses on a civilized vs. savage idea of duality. That the potion Dr. Jekyll concocted, did no separate his evil side from him, but rather letthe sleeping savage within him surge.
A good support for this theory is the symbolic meaning behind Hyde’s appearance as well as the use of physiognomy, which is the art of determining character or personal characteristics from the form or features of the body, especially of the face. He is depicted as being a hairy, ugly, deformed, and shrunken monster. His deformity is a way of depicting...
