SUSTAINABILITY GOVERNANCE IN SANTIAGO DE CHILE – CASE STUDIES CITY HALLS

ABSTRACT

The problems relating to the environment to whichsociety is faced today, to have influenced that increasingly, municipalities encourage the development of various initiatives, which through good practices is seeking to implement projects that bring benefits to the commune from a social point of view and the environment. This is a trend in some developed countries has significantly boosted through local government initiatives to pursue specificgoals such as those relating to energy efficiency, resource saving, recycling and waste education campaigns oriented environmental citizenship for a better understanding of the benefits in improved quality of life and its environment.

This paper aims to analyze and highlight the work done in Santiago de Chile principally the towns of La Pintana and The Queen, which include widely by level ofinnovation, and describe the strategies implemented sustainability, with emphasis on the value of such procedures in these local governments to create platforms for action, education and participation for sustainability.

Final objective of the document, aims to promote initiatives of local governments that although they seem isolated, allow guidelines and experience to deliver successful actionsthat have enabled the development and improvement of quality of life of its neighbors.

INTRODUCTIONCurrently, global environmental issues have been established strongly in the public and world leaders, contributing to greater awareness of the consequences to maintain our way of productive development, economic and consumption. Thus, as bodies have organized meetings to discuss major environmental issues facing our planet and therefore our society.

Thus the states through public policies havesought to provide a greater emphasis on environmental compliance and the promotion of environmental actions, and the public, thanks to improvements in access to information, have become aware of the importance of live in a society with a healthy environment, free from pollution, with emphasis on preservation of nature and conservation of natural assets.
