parental care during hospitalization
When preschool children are hospitalization, they bring with their greatest need and support system: their parents. This hospitalization may be a newexperience for the parents it is the responsability of the nurse to familiarize the parents with what is expected of them and to include them i the plan of care. parents need to know their role. whichmay vary from hospital to hospital. parents should be (1) allowed to participate in their child´s care. (2) given instructions. supervision. and support so that they can physically care for theirchild, (3) informed of the medical and nursing interventions and their role regarding these interventions; (4) encouraged to take some time off away from their child for personal and psychological needsnursing staff assumes care during their absence. (5) educated about the effects of hospitalization and separation on their chid and given assistance in coping with these behavioral changes. and (6)consulted on a daily basis about their needs and the needs and the needs of their child.

In some institutions. one person--a nurse, social worker. or parent educator--may be responsible for meetingwith the parents with or without their child to help them resolve their problems about their child´s hospitalization. these meetings are especially important if the child is hospitalized for a longperiod of time or in the intensive care unit for a prolonged period. in addition, other parents may be able to serve as a support system.
