At the 2005 World Summit, Heads of States reaffirmed that human rights, development and peace and security
are the three pillars of the UN and explicitly supported thefurther integration of human rights into the work of the
UN system and into their respective national policies. Special procedures, individually and as a system, contribute
significantly tomainstreaming human rights into UN and national policies, through their country visits, thematic
studies, or individual cases.
The main objective of this side event is to provide an opportunity to discuss howspecial procedures and other parts
of the United Nations can work together to ensure that human rights are mainstreamed across the work of the UN,
whether it is in the context of development, peaceand security and other areas. The panellists will provide the
perspectives of various sectors of the work of the UN.
The side event will seek to:
♦ Sensitize New York-based stakeholders to the workof special procedures and the ways in which they can
contribute to human rights mainstreaming;
♦ Identify challenges and opportunities in respect of human rights mainstreaming, through exchange ofexamples of good practices and lessons learned;
♦ Explore ways to strengthen cooperation and synergies between special procedures and other parts of the UN as
a way to contribute to a more coherentand consolidated approach to human rights mainstreaming throughout
the UN.
