Iago's View On Women

In Shakespeare’s plays women are portrayed as inferior to men, which is an understandable fact considering that in Shakespeare’s times women didn’t have the same rights asmen does. One of many Shakespeare’s plays where women are seen as inferior to men is Othello.
There are three women in this play, Desdemona, Bianca, and Emilia. The characterwho hates them the most is Iago, even though he is often referred to as "Honest", he lies, cheats and steals just to get what he want. Also, he hates women in all kinds, hesees women as an object, as something you can “possess” or “use”.
Starting with Desdemona, he sees her as a piece of property. The first time we can note this is in the act 1scene 1 line 80 “Thieves, thieves! Look to your house, your daughter and your bags” he went to Brabantio’s house and tells that her daughter has ran away with Othello.
It iseasy to tell that Iago felt little love for his wife Emilia. He let us know his view of women as someone you can manipulate. When he wanted to have revenge on Othello he usedhis own wife to take the handkerchief, without permission, and give it to him.
As well, in act 1 scene 3 line 310 “Ere I would say I would drown myself for the love of aguinea hen; I would change my humanity with a baboon. In other words, he says to Roderigo that he could change his humanity with a baboon rather than drowning himself for thelove of women.
In conclusion, Iago thinks that women are easily persuaded by men, so he called every woman a “whore” because he thinks that they are untrustworthy to theirhusbands and that they think all the time only in themselves. He also thinks that he can manipulate whoever he wants , and that he can use them as a piece of property.
