Foreign relations of India
India has formal diplomatic relations with most nations; it is world’s second populous country.
One of the fastest growing major economies inthe world. India is a regional power and potential superpower.
India is a newly industrialized country; it has a long history of collaboration with several countries and isconsidered a leader of the developing world.
India’s growing economy, strategic location, friendly foreign policy and large and large and vibrant diaspora has won it more allies thanenemies. Though India is not a part of any major military alliance, it has close strategic and military relationship with most of the major powers.
History
Even before independence, thegovernment of British India maintained semi-autonomous diplomatic relations. It had colonies and was a founder member of both the League of Nations.
After India gained independencefrom the United Kingdom in 1947, it soon joined the Commonwealth of Nations and strongly supported independence movements.
India adopted a foreign policy of not aligning itselfwith any major power bloc. However, India developed close ties with the Soviet Union and received extensive military support from it.
India’s foreign relations
India’s foreignrelations reflect a traditional policy of nonalignment. India’s relations with the world have evolved considerably since the British colonial period.
The Indian national congress hadestablished a small foreign department in 1925 to make overseas contacts and to publicize its freedom struggle.
