Colombia under the influence of the United States
Colombia has long been under the influence of the United States, not only politically and economically speaking but mainly militarily.Back in times of the Cold War, the U.S. was worried by the increasing communism wave in the eastern hemisphere with an increasingly menace of distributing over the Latin American countries,which ultimately reached Cuba and several other political parties over the continent.
The military support and influence from the U.S. to Colombia can easily be seen and traced back inMay, 1964, when a CIA program helped Colombian forces invade peasant enclaves which posed a threat to U.S. business interests.
Colombia poses a great source of illicit income to the U.S.,this is because they are the biggest buyers of Cocaine and Colombia is one of the biggest exporters of it. Having this in consideration it’s not hard to understand the huge amount ofinterests coming from U.S. multinationals.
According to the Andean Regional Initiative (ARI, 2001) the United States is supplying more than 1 billion dollars to Colombia as support, most of thismoney goes to the military while a small percentage goes to economic and social rejuvenation. Nevertheless, among Colombia’s Congress there are many who find this as a negative way ofgaining more influence and making Colombia a dependant country, which ultimately would be, neo colonialism.
The so-called “War on Drugs” has also been used in order to justify the U.S. soldiersover American military bases in Colombia.
Unfortunately, the wealth distribution in Colombia is hugely unequal, and we believe this is a reason for the Colombian elite to control their owninterests and protect the American interests as well, leaving the rest of the population helpless.
