Letting Neglected Reading and Writing?
Have you ever asked yourself why students of the foreign Language Department have many problems when readingauthentic material or writing short composition like a paragraph? Well, I personally have dealt with this problem since I was in the Basic Intensive English course and I have also seen many of myclassmates face this problem, too. The fact is that students of a foreign language like English should be learn it in an integral way, this means they should read and write it as well as speak and listenit. However, this is not exactly how teachers of the foreign language department are teaching English, so this causes students not develop their writing and reading skill as well as their speaking andlistening skill. In short, students of the Intensive English Courses at Foreign Language Department are neither good readers nor good writers because of the time dedicated to it, the given importanceand the provided extra material for reading and writing are not the same than the ones for speaking and listening.
The first cause that students of the Foreign Language Department are neithergood writers nor good readers is the less quantity of time teachers dedicate for writing and reading, compared with the time dedicated for listening and speaking. For instance, of two hours of classgenerally only a few minutes are spent for reading some article, while to an activity of speaking are dedicated at least half an hour. In fact, there are many activities which are dedicated to thepractice of the target language and that is good, but the thing is they do not dedicate the same time to the other skills. If we refer to the time teachers of the foreign language department dedicate towriting I would say that is practically nothing. Then you will ask, what happens with writing? How students learn to write a simple paragraph if teachers are not showing them how to do it? They simply...
