3. Description of Sponsoring Firm

3.1. Description of Industry:
South Gloucestershire Council is in the public sector, which is a sector controlled and operated by the government.Businesses in the public sector are predominantly funded through taxation and money made from their services. Since the emergence of the global recession in the early months of 2008, the public sector has taken a massive hit. Not only is there a lack of funding from the government, but the unemployment rate has increased which means more people are claiming benefits. Councils and governing bodies arecurrently cutting back on employees in order to cut costs, and South Gloucestershire Council is no exception (Gentleman, 2011).
3.2. Services:
South Gloucestershire Council provides a variety of different services to residents of South Gloucestershire, including: public transport, care homes, leisure facilities, schools, welfare services, cycle training, disabled services, hospitals, children’splay areas, waste services, road safety and development, adult learning, community safety and much more.

4.1. S.M.A.R.T. Goals
At the start of my internship I set myself the following S.M.A.R.T. objectives, meaning they had to be specific, measureable, attainable, reasonable and time-specific.
• Have a piece of externalcommunications published at the end of the five-week period.

• Receive at least three e-mail addresses by the end of the five-week period through effective networking.

• Help the council in developing their social media/networking campaign.

My evaluation of my S.M.A.R.T goals can be found in the conclusion section on page 9.

4.2. Description of Internship ResponsibilitiesAs a Communications Officer, I was responsible for writing and issuing press releases, answering phone calls in relation to press enquiries, writing articles for South Gloucestershire News (SGN) and taking photographs to be issued alongside releases.
