Carrera de historia que inició por correspondencia, ya que cuando quiso estudiarla en Medellín, ninguna universidad la ofrecía. Sus amigos Jorge Orlando Melo y Germán Colmenares, que estaban enBogotá cursándola, le mandaban los libros que el maestro de maestros Jaime Jaramillo Uribe les hacía leer. Así se hizo historiador.
