Panama City (Spanish: Ciudad de Panamá) is the capital and largest city of the Republic. It has a population of 880,691, with a total metro population of 1,272,672,[2] and it is located at the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal, in the province of Panama. The city is the political and administrative center of the country as well as a hub for international banking and commerce.[3] It isconsidered a Beta World City and the most important city of Central America.[4]
With an average GDP per capita of $11,700,[5] Panama has been among the top five places for retirement in the world, according to Living magazine.[citation needed] Panama City has a dense skyline of mostly high-rise buildings, and it is surrounded by a large belt of tropical rainforest. Panama's Tocumen International Airport, the largest and busiest airport in Central America, offers daily flights to major international destinations.

Panama City was chosen to be the 2003 American Capital of Culture jointly witchuritiba, Brazil.

Panama City was founded on August 15, 1519, by Spanish conquistador Pedro Arias Davila. The city was the starting point for expeditions that conquered the Inca Empire in Peru. It was astopover point on one of the most important trade routes in the history of the American continent leading to the fairs of Nombre de Dios and Portobelo, where most of the gold and silver that Spain took from the Americas passed through.

On January 21, 1673, the city was destroyed by a fire when pirate Morgan sacked and set fire to it. The city was formally reestablished two years later on January21, 1675, in a peninsula located 8 km from the original settlement. The site of the previously devastated city is still in ruins and is now a popular tourist attraction known as Panama Viejo.

RELIGION

The government of Panama does not collect statistics on the religious affiliation of citizens, but various sources estimate that 75 to 85% of the population identifies itself as RomanCatholic and 15–25% as evangelical Christian.[35] The Bahá'í Faith community of Panama is estimated at 2.00% of the national population, or about 60,000[36] including about 10% of the Guaymí population;[41] the Bahá'ís maintain one of the world's seven Baha'i Houses of Worship in Panama.[35] The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) claim more than 40,000 members.[42] Smallerreligious groups include Adventists, Jehovah’s, Episcopalians with between 7,000 and 10,000 members, Jewish and Muslim communities with approximately 10,000 members each, Hindus, Buddhists, and other Christians.[35] Indigenous religions include Ibeorgun (among Kuna) and Mamatata(among Ngobe).[35] There is also a small number of Rastafarians.[35]

GEOGRAPHY

Panama is located in Central America, bordering both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, between Colombia and Costa Rica. It mostly lies between latitudes 7° and 10°N, and longitudes 77° and 83°W (a small area lies west of 83°). Some people consider the territory east of the Panama Canal as part of South America[citation needed] although this is rare. Its location on the Isthmus of Panama is strategic. By 2000, Panama controlledthe Panama Canal which connects the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea to the North of the Pacific Ocean. Panama, at 75,515 km2, is ranked 118th worldwide on the basis of land size. For comparison, Panama is slightly smaller than the U.S. state of South Carolina or slightly larger than the Canadian province of New Brunswick.

The dominant feature of the country's landform is the central spine ofmountains and hills that forms the continental divide. The divide does not form part of the great mountain chains of North America, and only near the Colombian border are there highlands related to theAndean system of South America. The spine that forms the divide is the highly eroded arch of uplift from the sea bottom, in which peaks were formed by volcanic intrusions.
