Daniel Alcides Carrión García (* Cerro de Pasco, Peru, August 13, 1857 - Lima October 5, 1885) was a medical student in Peru (Cerro de Pasco), considered a martyr of American medicine for their sacrifice when infected of the bacterium Bartonella bacilliformis and contract the disease now known as Carrion or Peruvian wart, by way of studying their development and evolution in the infected.

Sonof medical and Ecuadorian lawyer Baltasar Carrion and Dolores Torres and Garcia Navarro. [1]

He attended elementary school in the town of Cerro de Pasco. The accidental death of his father left him an orphan at the age of 8 years, so he had to continue their studies in the city of Tarma in the care of a relative of his mother.

At 14 years old he moved to Lima and entered the GuadalupeCollege, where he studied from 1873 to 1878 the secondary school with excellent grades and a half. Upon reaching high school diploma, he enrolled in 1878 at the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Mayor de San Marcos, to pursue medical studies, which take place with remarkable success.

During his medical studies, he felt deep interest in understanding some features of both diseases Peruviancentral valleys: one, known as "Oroya fever", characterized by fever and progressive anemia that despite the treatment that was done in that time, had a mortality approaching 100%.

Another process called "Peruvian Wart" was equal geographical distribution, but benign, with the sudden appearance of skin nodules and few general symptoms. Until then it was considered that both boxes had differentetiologies.

Driven by his spirit of inquiry, did not hesitate a macerated inoculated tumor blood of the patient verrucosa Carmen Paredes admitted to the Board of Mercy Hospital Dos de Mayo in Lima, and the August 27, 1885 requested Dr. Evaristo M. Chavez did you inoculation.

At twenty days have you felt the first symptoms of Oroya fever, which continued his evolution feature, to the anguish oftheir teachers and friends. Carrión personally wrote his history until 26 September, when overwhelmed by fever and anemia, delirium came into being, at his request, his companions to follow the important clinical document as it had started heroic.

Daniel Alcides Carrión in a state of agony, was transferred to the Maison de Santé, 4 October and died the next day was October 5, 1885, having spentforty days after inoculation. His last words were: 'C'est fini: this is over. Before reaching them express the wish that the studies go ahead, conscious of having contributed to a better understanding of the disease that now bears his name: "I have not died .. my friend, now your turn to finish the work begun , following the path that I have drawn.

The remains of Daniel Alcides Carrión are in theMaster Priest Cemetery. As a tribute, many academic institutions and civilians, including hospitals, stadiums and schools named after him.

Hijo del médico y abogado ecuatoriano Baltasar Carrión y Torres y de Dolores García Navarro.[1]

Realizó sus estudios primarios en la escuela municipal de Cerro de Pasco. El fallecimiento accidental de su padre, lo dejó huérfanoa la edad de 8 años, por lo que debió continuar sus estudios en la ciudad de Tarma al cuidado de un familiar de su madre.
