Led Zeppelin was a one of a kind rock band; they were without a doubt the most important band of the 70’s. When they came out into the light of success,there was something in their band that could be categorized relatively as “new”, it was their image and performance, which had an extreme level of sexuality for that time. Following the steps of greatsexual acts like Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Elvis Presley and Jimi Hendrix, they surely took it to the next level, and helped develop that rock cliché of been promiscuous, take drugs, and showthat macho image that attracts the ladies and make the men want to be like them.
The band brought also into mainstream rock the sexual innuendo in their lyrics. Early blues singers, did it first, butit was led zeppelin who made it listenable for millions. Songs like “The Lemon Song”, “Whole Lotta Love”, “Custard Pie” demonstrates the sexual innuendo that characterized their band. “Squeeze me,babe, 'till the juice runs down my leg” – This lyric taken out of The Lemon Song show us Robert Plant talking about squeezing a lemon, but it clearly resemble an image of masturbation. These lyrics madethe fans feel more open with sexuality, it made them feel like this new counterculture of promiscuity and taking drugs was a cool thing to do. People were attracted to this kind of image, and like inevery era, lots of teenagers started to do these things.
The band’s music and constant touring in the early years made them the biggest band of the 70s. Not only in the U.S and the U.K, but in theentire world, people heard Led Zeppelin. People in other countries who were not influenced yet by the hippie movement, got that image of the band, and thought it was alright to adopt that counterculture.As fans, they wanted to be like their heroes.
