STRATEGIES TO LEARN VOCABULARY.
“Vocabulary Journal” Strategy
Knowledge of vocabulary can be acquired and retained in various ways. Aneffective method is through
a vocabulary journal. You can clarify unfamiliar words or phrases by listing them on a chart in journals. You must write what you perceive is the definition by reading and recognizing clues within the sentence or surrounding sentences. You must note the type of context clue they used in order to derive the meaning of the word or phrase. This activity must be carried out inconjunction with the lesson on idiomatic expressions.

Review how to clarify for meaning when confronting unfamiliar words or phrases within the context of any text in the section meaning from context . Word Mapping Strategy
An effectivemethod to acquire vocabulary knowledge is through word mapping, in which students enhance their understanding of key words by graphically mapping them. For example, on the first map shown on this page, you can map a word’s meaning as derived from its context. Then, you can present a figurative meaning for the word by comparing it to a known object. Finally, you can connect the word’s meaning tothree different elements which illustrate its use.

On the second map, students will study a word’s meaning and then supply three antonyms, three
synonyms, and three examples which illustrate itsmeaning.
