History: Guatemala today, a representative democratic republic, free and independent, is what remains of the former Captaincy General. The Spanish discovered this land in the earlysixteenth century and conquered by expeditions led by famous masters of the time, such as Alvarado, Pedrarias Dávila Gil González, Cortés and Montejo. After independence from Spain, Guatemala took thename of Central United Providences, because the old orders were organized as the United Federal Republic; federation that did not last long disintegrated in mid-nineteenth century in five autonomousstates.
