There are around 40,000 cases of salmonella infections in the US each year. Salmonella is an unpleasant type of food poisoning that can grow on foods thatare not cooked well. A person who gets sick from salmonella may vomit and experience pain in their stomach. Don't worry, scientists are working to find a way to protect people against this illness.They are using outer space as their laboratory!
[pic]Scientists are trying to create a vaccine against salmonella food poisoning aboard the International Space Station. This is the first timescientists are studying the effect of spaceflight on poisonous bacteria like salmonella.
Julie Robinson, a scientist at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, believes that this research may improve the waywe store our food. The research could also help doctors treat infections from other bacteria similar to salmonella, as well as help protect astronauts from disease while in space.
