Although his research clearly has its roots in the alchemical tradition, Boyle is largely regarded today as the first modern chemist, and therefore one of the founders ofmodern chemistry, and one of the pioneers of modern experimental scientific method. He is best known for Boyle's law,[2]which describes the inversely proportional relationship between theabsolute pressure and volume of a gas, if the temperature is kept constant within a closed system.[3][4] Among his works, The Sceptical Chymist is seen as a cornerstone book in the field of chemistry.
Jacques AlexandreCésar Charles (November 12, 1746 – April 7, 1823) was a French inventor, scientist, mathematician, and balloonist.
Charles and the Robert brothers launched the world's first(unmanned) hydrogen-filled balloon in August 1783; then in December 1783, Charles and his co-pilot Nicolas-Louis Robert ascended to a height of about 1,800 feet (550 m) in a manned balloon. Their pioneering use ofhydrogen for lift led to this type of balloon being named a Charlière (as opposed to a Montgolfière which used hot air).
Charles's law, describing how gases tend to expand when heated, was formulatedby Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac in 1802, but he credited it to unpublished work by Jacques Charles.[1]
Charles was elected to the Académie des Sciences, in 1793, and subsequently became professor ofphysics at the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers.
