Modern Art vs. Postmodern Art
Modernism is an art period that started in the late 19th and 20th century. This was a response mainly due to the quick development of cities, the aftermaths of theSecond World War and the overall changes in western society. A tendency towards the abstract was born and artists started experimenting with materials, new ways of looking at things, and new materials.Some of the main characteristics of modernism are progress of science and technology, a faith in the “grand theory” of being able to explain everything and represent all knowledge. Modern art is morehierarchical, organized, centered, with a certain purpose and in a way more rational.
Postmodern art in turn looks more at the populist ideas, it is more irrational and anarchical, it is moresubjective and doesn’t make generalizations, it is not necessarily coherent, and it stands by the idea that reality is socially constructed and anthropocentric. It is common to se self-conscious uses ofparody and pastiche to undermine a sense of order or time. Postmodern art stands by the idea that there are many plural realities instead of one universal one. More techniques like recycling, usinginstallations and appropriations emerge. There is also the beginning of an experimental approach. Post modern art is present in many representations like photography, video, installations, digital art, etc.They don’t necessarily appeal to a visual beauty but convey their ideas more through concepts. It always asks a question of the viewer and involves him in the process.
As a conclusion I can say thatthere is a lot to talk about from both modern and postmodern art, but in general, I think postmodern art is the one that requires more of your interaction with the artwork, it is not always easy tounderstand and maybe leaves a stronger impression on you after being in contact with it because it needs an open mind for you to see art in objects that can be as simple as books, bottles, recycled...
