Mr loveday’s little outing

Since I’m about to write my opinion about this short story, I must admit I was not thrilled by it. The way in which is written makes it interesting but it just can’t stand on its own, at least that’smy opinion.

It’s rather clever, I’ll admit that much, but the facts are in your face all the time, which doesn’t allow the reader to really think on its own. Everything is there, right from thestart and the end is not surprising at all.

The names the author chose are really interesting if you stop to observe the characters, and the hint of dark humour is very welcomed.

Now for the realdeal: At the start you can see the picture of the perfect dysfunctional family. Lord and Lady Moping and their daughter. Lord Moping is supposedly insane and locked at the County Asylum. People mayask why the use of “supposedly”, well it is quite understandable, the poor fellow hated the annual garden party his wife offered and always threatened suicide on the occasion, but his wife, toooccupied with her own needs, never took him seriously so he finally turned the threat into action. Since Lady Moping was enraged by this action, she immediately sends him to the Asylum, never to return home.She is far more comfortable with the hubby in the loony bin, and it is quite evident in her demeanour.

Angela, on the other hand, is not “comfortable” with the situation, it’s something deeperthan that, she simply doesn’t care. Out of sight, out of mind must be her motto because she just forgets about her father. Strangely enough she is charmed by Mr Loveday. There she presents the picture ofadolescent single-minded determination, starting a campaign for Mr Loveday’s freedom.

And of course Mr Loveday is the picture of a good man, a great helper. He doesn’t show sign of being a lunaticat all. His past is rather violent, but that seems to lose importance for everyone surrounding him. So is not surprising that after being released he commits the same crime, after all he could be...
