This name uses Spanish naming customs; the first or paternal family name is Brenes and the second or maternal family name is Cárdenas.

Nery Antonio Brenes Cárdenas (born September 25, 1985 in Limón) is a Costa Rican sprinter.[1] He is one of Costa Rica's up-and-rising athletes and reached the semi-finals at the 400 metre sprint in the 2008 OlympicGames in Beijing.[2] Brenes has participated in major events like the 2007 World Championships in Athletics in Osaka, Japan, and achieved a 4th place finish at the 2008 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Valencia, Spain. He also finished in 3rd place at the 2008 ÅF Golden League meet in Oslo, Norway. Central American record (44:94) in Beijing 2008.

Nery Brenes avanza a final de mundial de atletismo
San José / ACAN-EFE.- El velocista costarricense Nery Brenes ha hecho historia para su país al clasificar hoy a la final de los 400 metros planos en elmundial de atletismo bajo techo de Valencia 2008, un hecho sin precedentes, aseguró una fuente deportiva.
El presidente de la Federación Costarricense de Atletismo (FECOA) , Roberto Verdessia, declaró a Acan-Efe que “ esto es un hecho histórico en el atletismo de Costa Rica y una verdadera proeza de Nery Brenes ” , quien ya está clasificado para los Juegos Olímpicos Pekín 2008.
