ACT ONE
SCENE ONE
Living Room
Wendla: Why have you made such a long dress for me, Mother? It’s too big.
Mrs Bergmann: It’s your fourteenth birthday, Wendla. You’re not a little child anymore!
Wendla: I’d rather have never reached fourteen if I’d have known you’d make me address this long.
Mrs Bergmann: It’s not too long, Wendla. What can I do? It’s not my fault you seem togrow two inches every spring. You’re almost a grown woman now, baby – you can’t go out dressed like a little princess.
Wendla: At least I look better in the princess dress than this boring sackcloth. Let me wear this just a little while longer, mother! Until the end of summer? It will still fit me when I’m fifteen – let’s put it away until my next birthday – or I’ll only trip on the hem andtear it.
Mrs Bergmann: I don’t know what to say. I could happily keep you just as you are now. Most girls your age are gangly or heavy, but not you, you’re the opposite. I wonder – what will you be like when the others are fully grown?
Wendla: Who knows – maybe I won’t be here at all.
Mrs Bergmann: Oh my baby, where do you get such ideas?
Wendla: Mama, Mama don’t be sad, I’m sorry.
Mrs Bergmann:(kissing her) Oh my beautiful baby.
Wendla: They come at night, when I can’t sleep. They don’t make me sad at all and I sleep so much better afterwards. Mama, is it a sin to think such things?
Mrs Bergmann: Take it – go and hang it in the wardrobe. Keep the princess dress on for as long as you like. I’ll sew a ruffle to the bottom when I get a chance.
Wendla: (Hanging dress up) Oh please no,I’d rather be twenty than that!
Mrs Bergmann: I don’t want you to catch cold, Wendla, that’s all. Last year that dress was too long for you, but now...

Spring Awakening
Wendla:
It’s almost summer, mother. Oh, mama – even children can’t catch tuberculosis in their knees! You worry too much. We don’t feel the cold at my age –least of all in the legs. Would you prefer I get too hot? You should bethankful your darling baby doesn’t rip off her sleeves altogether and run out of the house at dusk with no shoes or socks on! When I wear the sackcloth I’ll be dressed like a fairy queen underneath. Don’t be angry, mama. No-one can ever know then.

SCENE TWO
Sunday Evening
Melchior: This game’s boring. I give up.
Otto: If you stop, we all have to. Have you done the homework, Melchior?Melchior: Keep playing without me!
Moritz: Where are you going?
Melchior: For a walk.
Otto: But it’s getting dark!
Ernst: Have you done the homework already?
Melchior: Why shouldn’t I go for a walk in the dark?
Ernst: Central America! Louis the fifteenth! Sixty lines of Homer! Seven quadratic Equations!
Melchior: Damn the homework!
Hänschen: If only they didn’t want the Latin essay tomorrow aswell.
Moritz: No matter what you want to do, homework always gets in the way.
Otto: I’m going home.
Ernst: Me too – homework.
Hänschen: Good night, Melchior.
Melchior: Sleep well!
( All leave except Melchior and Moritz )

Melchior: You know what? I wish I knew why we were here – on this Earth.
Moritz: I wish I knew why we go to school. I’d rather be a cart horse! What dowe go to school for? To take exams! What do we take exams for? So they can fail us. Seven of us have to fail this year; the upper class only holds sixty. I’ve felt so peculiar since Christmas – I swear to God if it weren’t for my father I’d pack my bags and sign on board a ship tonight.
Melchior: Let’s talk about something else.
(They walk )
Moritz: Do you see that black cat, with its tail inthe air?
Melchior: I didn’t know you were superstitious.
Moritz: I don’t think I am. It came from over there. It doesn’t mean anything.
