Charles Dickens is one of the greatest English writers. He was born in the south of England on 7th February 1812. His father didn’t earn much money so be couldn’t pay the bills and he and his wife went to prison. Charles, who was 12 years old went to work in a factory, he was very unhappy. When Dickens was 15 Dickens he went to work in an office. In 1833, he startedwriting stories. He because very famous and very rich. Oliver Twist was published in 1838. Other famous books are: A Christmas Carol, A Tale of Two Cities, and Great Expectations. Many of his stories are about poor people. Charles Dickens died on 9th June 1870. He was 58. He is buried in London.

Play: Time and Gender.
Oliver Twist takes place in London in the 1830s. At this time many rich peoplelived in London and thousands of poor people lived there too. They had no work and many men, women, and children became criminals.
England is divided into countries and each country is divided into parishes. In the nineteenth century a workhouse was built in every parish. The officials of the parish had to look after poor people. The poor people were made to work very hard and the food was verybad.
It is a novel, it is a sad story which describes the English society in the nineteenth century. The differences between the rich people and the poor people.

Characters: Main and Secondary.
The main character is Oliver Twist, a poor orphan child. The secondary characters are: Agnes Fleming, Oliver’s mother, Mrs. Corney a drunk nurse, Mr. Bumble, the master of the workhouse, Nancy, BillSikes’s girl, Monks, Oliver's half-brother and a mysterious stranger, Fagin and his boys: the Artful Dodger and Charley Bates, Mr. Brownlow, an old gentleman, Mrs. Maylie, a kind lady and Rose Maylie, her niece.

Plot:
The baby’s mother asked a drunken nurse to look after the child, and then she died.
An official of the parish workhouse Mr. Bubble named the child Oliver Twist.
He was now 11years old. He was pale and thin. The beadle beat the children with his stick. When Oliver was sent to a dark room in the cellar. He felt cold hungry and afraid. He ran away. He began to walk. He wanted to get to London. He met a boy called Artful Dodger he took him to a dark and dirty room. There was an old man called Fagin. He taught him how to steal handkerchiefs. There was another boy calledCharley and one girl called Nancy. One day Oliver was taken to a square. Dodger stole one handkerchief from an old gentleman. Oliver was terrified but the owner of the bookstall said that he had done nothing. Charley and Dodger told Fagin what had happened them a young man called Bill Sikes and came in sent Nancy to look for Oliver.
When Oliver woke up, he was in Mr. Brownlow’s house he took him tothe library. There was a painting of a very young woman. Oliver looked very like her. One day he sent the boy to return books and a five pound note to the bookstall. Nancy grabbed him by the arm, Bill Sikes dragged him along the streets. Fagin hit the boy. Nancy didn’t want them to hurt Oliver, he couldn’t escape.
Nancy took Oliver to a house where Bill was, he had a gun. He realized that they weregoing to break into a house. Oliver had to go through a window.
There was a crash and a shout. They carried the wounded boy and ran away. He was left by the side of the road, he went to the house where he had been, and Rose Maylie opened the door and recognized him. He told them his terrible story. When Toby and Sikes went back to Fagin’s house, he asked where the boy was. They didn’t know ifhe was alive or dead.
Fagin went to Sikes’s house and told Nancy that Oliver was hurt. Some weeks later Oliver was in Mailey’s house. He could see two men in the windows but he didn’t tell Rose or her aunt what he had seen.
Oliver lived happily with Rose and her aunt. Bill and Toby couldn't steal anything, Bill had become ill. Nancy looked after Sikes, he hit her.
Fagin, Dodger and Charley...
