But things can change now after decades of suffer andoppression. Recently the President Thein Sein, a retired general and former junta member announced that they would hold elections as part of a grand plan to turn the country into a “discipline –flourishing democracy”. He persuaded the opposition force to reregister as a political party and contest the coming by- elections.
The opposition is led by Suu Kyi who has just celebrated her firstanniversary of freedom from house arrest. She is the daughter of the independence hero and has spent much of her life living abroad and after that under house arrest. This women is running for a seat inthe parliament and she is has hope that things can change in Burma, also called Myanmar. Suu Kyi is not allowed to serve as president because of a bizarre rule that bars anyone ever married to aforeigner from leading the land. She was married to a British scholar who died while she was under house arrest.
People are afraid that this election is just a political strategy and the militarygovernment will continue exercising the power. Some movements from the current government seem that a change is coming, for example president Sein met recently with the leadership of the opposition. Inaddition after small protests in Burma no one was arrested or shot, while in the past this was a current way to oppress people.
Hillary Clinton visited Burma recently and this is another demonstration thatthe country is really changing for the international community and is not another lie from the government. Also thousands of political prisoners, including monks have been realized from jail....
