1. Introduction 1.1. The organization
Asociación de Pequeños Productores de Cacao de Piura (APPROCAP), is an organization of 300 small cacao producers in Piura. The objective of the organization is to improve the production of cacao, to promote sales of thecacao produced by the farmers and to improve the life of farmers and their families on an economical and social level. The organization has headquarters in Bigote that also serves as a collection and processing center for the cacao, the processing capacity of Bigote is 10.000 kg per month. Five other smaller collection centers (4.000 kg capacity each) have been donated to APPROCAP but are not inuse mainly because of lack of qualified staff to run them. The organization produces both conventional cacao and special cacao, which is exported mainly to Europe. The exporting figures of the organization for the last 5 years are demonstrated in the graph below. One container of exported cacao is 16.000kg, which means that the current capacity of APPROCAP is 3-3,5 containers per year.

Cacao Processing
In order to grow effectively the cacao plant needs optimal amount of humidity, heat and shadow. The plant needs to be protected with shadow to protect against to much sunshine, for this reason the cacaoplant is often grown next to other trees and banana plants. A regular precipitations ( of 100 mm month ) is necessary however short periods of drought can be compensated with frequently cloudy skies combined with high humidity. The optimal mean temperature is 25 °C. Main harvesting season of cacao starts in January and lasts until June.
