In this project you will acquire the FT-IR spectra of various samples of householdplastics using attenuated total reflectance (ATR).  ATR is a sample interface that enables routine analysis of solids with little to no sample preparation.  The sample is sandwiched between a crystal of high refractive index and a clamp constructed of a diamond tip. The IR beam is directed through the crystal toward the sample at an angle that ensures total reflection at the interface between thecrystal and the sample.  The IR radiation penetrates into the sample a very small distance (a few wavelengths of light).  This penetrating radiation is called an evanescent wave.  During this penetration, the vibrating chemical bonds in the sample absorb some of the radiation. The attenuated reflected beam is then detected by the transducer and the resulting FID signal is processed to produce...
