KINGSTON

Jamaica is anisland nation of the Greater Antilles, 240 km long and up to 80 km wide, located in the Caribbean Sea. It is 630 km from the Central American continent, 150 km south of Cuba and 180 km west of theisland of Spanish, which are Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

← Kingston is the capital of Jamaica.

← It is located in the southeast of the island and has a population of approximately577,774 inhabitants (2010).

← Is located in Kingston Parish, Surrey County.

Has a natural harbor protected by Palisadoes, name given to a long sandbar that connects Port Royal and the NormanManley International Airport with the rest of the island.

← The city was founded in 1693 by the British after an earthquake destroyed most of the old capital, Port Royal.

← The city becamethe seat of the administration of Jamaica in 1872.

← It kept this status when the island gained independence in 1962.

← On January 14, 1907, an earthquake in Kingston, killing over1,000 people.

← The central area of Kingston consists of two parts: the historic but troubled Downtown, and New Kingston where are most visited attraction, the "Bob Marley Museum, built in theirhome.

← Other attractions include the nearby beaches of Hellshire and Lime Cay, the National Gallery of Jamaica, the ruins of Port Royal and Devon House, with an adjacent park that once belongedto Jamaica's first black millionaire
