Prediseño de una Planta Piloto de Biodiésel a Partir de Aceite
Reciclado de Cocina

Abstract: The objective of this project was to
create a pre-design of a biodiesel pilot plant
based on recycled cooking oils, for academic and
investigative purposes. This plant has an original
design that attempts to create a knowledge bank
ofthis kind of biocombustibles to allow
improvements in the current productive process
and its adaptation to the Chilean primary source.
After a revision of books and publications about
current biodiesel production technologies and
posterior analysis was completed, the original
process diagram was established. This allowed
for the completion of the planned objectives and
also considered the importantfactors as: Chilean
legislation applicable to biodiesel, variation
capacity in the production and test system,
incorporation of proven technology components,
and besides those also introducing innovating
factors that will permit development of an
original technology productive process in the
next stages.
It was decided that the plant would have the
capacity of working under a continual reaction
andBatch System, with a maximum production
capacity of 50 l/h under continual operation
system and 50 l under Batch System. Once all
the possibilities had been analyzed, it was
decided that the designed production process
would be based on an Alkaline Catalysis using
potassium hydroxide as a “catalyst and methanol
as an alcohol.
With relation to the plant components, in the
technical description ofthe plant, most of its
subsystems designs were made, leaving some of
them to the second stage of the project, which is
going to be developed in Chile. This was because
of the distance with the equipment suppliers and
the difficulty in contacting them.
The cost of this project is approximately 45.825
euros equivalent to 34.139.266 Chilean pesos.
Operational costs and required materials or
equipmentto the correct functioning for the
duration of the project must be added to this
value (this value wasn’t considered in this
project’s objectives, so they will be part of the
second stage of this project). Independently of
the values which must be added, this project’s
cost is within the margins which are accepted by
the investigation project funding.
This document will take part in aninvestigation
project which will be presented to government
funds which finance I+D projects in Chile. This
second stage will be developed in Chile, where a

specialized team from the University of Chile
will take care of the definitive design of the
plant, so it can be constructed. In any case, the
Forestry Sciences Faculty of the University of
Chile is aware of this project and it gives its
approval....
