REM KOOLHAAS BIOGRAPHY
Remment Koolhaas was born in Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, on November 17, 1944. One of his grandfathers was a modernist architect, while his father was a novelist, criticand screenwriter. The Koolhaas family moved to Jakarta after Indonesia won their independence in 1952, and remained there until 1955. Rem Koolhaas later majored in scriptwriting at the Netherlands Filmand Television Academy, and wrote for the Haagse Post during the late 1960s.
Rem Koolhaas Creates The Oma
In 1968, he enrolled at the Architectural Association School in London. Following graduationin 1972, he furthered his architectural studies at Cornell University in New York. With Elia and Zoe Zenghelis and his wife Madelon Vriesendorp, Rem Koolhaas cofounded the Office for MetropolitanArchitecture (OMA) in 1975. OMA first gained recognition on the international stage with their contribution to the 1980 Venice Biennale.
In 1978, during which time he was a visiting scholar at NewYork's Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies, Rem Koolhaas published his first book entitled Delirious New York. Perhaps his best-known publication, S, M, L, XL, appeared in 1995. Coauthored withBruce Mau and Hans Werlemann, the nearly 1,400-word book was a collection of manuscripts, manifestos and meditations on the city of today.

The Kunsthal in RemKoolhaas' birth city of Rotterdam, completed in 1992, became the first big project designed by himself and his OMA associates. Some of their previous works include the Netherlands Dance Theater in The Hagueand Nexus Housing in Fukuoka, Japan. In 1994, they created the Grand Palais in Lille, France. While designing Universal's (now Vivendi) headquarters during the late 1990s, Rem Koolhaas and his partnersconceived the AMO, a think tank headed by himself and Reinier de Graaf. The organization was initially set up to develop solutions for media enterprises and the concept of the virtual domain.
