In the world Dominican Republic is known as a holyday destination, with white sand, warm water, and luxury hotel. For us in Chile the most famous Dominican is Juan Luis Guerra, a verypopular singer in all Latin-American.
History
The first place where Christopher Columbus took land in 1492 was Dominican Republic. Its first name was “La Hispaniola” (The Spanish) and was the firstEuropean settlement in America. For the next centuries they were dominated by Spain and used the island for slave traffic between Africa and America. This situation finished in 1844 when they becameindependent from Spain, after the war of independence leaded by Juan Pablo Duarte.
The republic suffered political instability, with direct intervention from the United States. The Dominican sufferedmany dictatorships during the 20th century, and one of them was from Rafael Trujillo that dominated the island for 31 years until he was killed. (1961).
The political regime was stabilized afterthe dead of Trujillo. Today is a representative democracy.
Today the president is Mr. Leonel Fernandez.
Geography
The Dominican Republic shares the island with the country of Haiti that islocated in the western sector. The island is part of the Great Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean Region. The other borders are on the north with the Atlantic Ocean, south with the Caribbean Sea andeast with the “Mona passage”.
Population
The population is ten millions ninety thousand people. Most of it is concentrated in the capital, Santo Domingo.
68% is Catholic, 18% evangelical, 10% hasother god and 7% is atheist.
The country patron saint is Our Lady of Mercy and as a protector Our Lady of Altagracia.
