COLONY, HONEY PLANT AND MARKET CONDITIONS DURING MAY, 2011 APPALACHIAN DISTRICT (MD, PA, VA, WV): Temperatures were slightly above average and there were several rainy days in a row. During the latter part of the month, skies cleared and hot, humid weather blanketed the area. Honey production was light due to the inconsistentweather during peak pollen times. With the dry weather, growers were able to get fields planted with vegetable crops, which is 1-2 weeks later than normal. Colonies continued to be in generally good health. Honeysuckle, blackberries, and wildflowers provided nectar. In some areas, field crops were beginning to come into bloom. ALABAMA: Late April weather and an early May cool spell slowed honeybeesdown but they have recovered and have collected a considerable amount of nectar. Beekeepers are reporting good honey production but not as good as last year. There has been some disease problems (European Foulbrood) but bees seem to be thriving. Swarming has been lower than usual in North Alabama probably because of winter and spring weather conditions while swarming has been average in SouthAlabama. Early May privet was blooming but wasn’t as heavy a flow as in some years. It has gone and bees were working white clover, dandelion, a few weeds and flowers, and chinese tallow in southern Alabama. Small hive beetles were insignificant. ARIZONA: Temperatures began the month at normal levels. This was followed by two weeks of below normal temperatures, before ending the month at above normallevels. The high temperature for the month was recorded in Yuma at 103°F; while the low for the month was 14°F at the Grand Canyon. During a one week period, 0 to 11 of the reporting districts reported receiving precipitation. The state continued to suffer through a dry spell.
