1) SAGD: Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage: is an enhanced oil recovery technology for producing heavy crude oil andbitumen. It is an advanced form of steam stimulation in which a pair of horizontal wells are drilled into the oil reservoir, one a few meters above the other. High pressure steam is continuously injectedinto the upper wellbore to heat the oil and reduce its viscosity, causing the heated oil to drain into the lower wellbore, where it is pumped out.1 The Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD)technology uses underground wells to inject steam into the oil sands deposits and collect the bitumen released by the heat.2

The oil sands are loose sand or partially consolidated sandstone containing naturally occurring mixtures of sand, clay, and water, saturated with a dense andextremely viscous form of petroleum technically referred to as bitumen (or colloquially tar due to its similar appearance, odor and color)3. Alberta's oil sands have been described by Time Magazine as "Canada's greatest buried energy treasure." But what is oil sandexactly?
Oil sand is a naturally occurring mixture of sand, clay or other minerals, water and bitumen, which is heavy and extremely viscous oil that must be treated before it can be used by refineries toproduce usable fuels such as gasoline and diesel. Bitumen is so viscous that at room temperature it acts much like cold molasses. A variety of treatment methods are currently available to oil sandsproducers and new methods are put into practice as more research is completed and new technology 4.
