An analysis of health clinic demand by E. showed that greatest number of walk-in patients arrived on Monday and fewer during the remaining weekdays. While wlk-in demand is not controllable,appointments are. Therefore, why not make appointments in the latter part of the week to level demand? Using data for the same week in the previous year, these researchers noted the number of walk-in patientsfor each weekday. Subtracting these walk-in from daily physician capacity gives the number of appointment patients who are needed each day to smooth demand. For the sample week shown in Figure 11.2,this procedure yielded the number of appointment periods per day shown in Table 11.2

The daily smoothing of demand was refined further by scheduling appoinments at appropriate times during the day. After a two-month shakedown period, smoothing demandyielded the following benefits:

The number of patient seen increased by 13.4 percent
This increase in patient demand was met, even though 5.1 percent fewer physician hours were scheduled.
Theoverall time physicians spent with patients increased 5.0 percent because of the increased number of appointments.
The average waiting time for patients remained the same
