Should Same-Sex Marriage Be Legalized?

Thesis Statement: Even though some people don’t agree with same-sex marriage, I believe it should be made legal.

II. Body
OpposingArgument 1:
Opponents say that same-sex marriage would destroy the institution of marriage.
Rebuttal to Argument 1:
1. The institution of marriage is already in crisis.
a. Divorces ratesare at an all-time high.
b. Infidelity rates are also increasing nowadays.

2. There aren’t credible studies that have found that children are negatively affected by being raised in a lesbianor gay household.
a. Many couples will marry and not have children, whether they are gay or straight couples.
b. Gay couples are already having children without the benefit of marriage.Opposing Argument 2:
Opponents claim that most religions consider homosexuality a sin; therefore, same-sex marriage is also a sin.
Rebuttal to Argument 2:
1. A person’s religious views or lackthereof must be protected.
a. Government shouldn’t make laws based on a religion because it might be that not all of the citizens follow that particular religion or any religion at all.
b.Separation of church and state is essential to the freedom we enjoy as Peruvians.

2. The only thing that should matter in marriage is love.
a. All religions agree that love is one of the mostimportant things along with happiness, so why don’t they let same-sex couple marry?
b. Some philosophes state that the love between two men is the strongest and deeper love out there.

Opponents argue that taxes shouldn’t be used to pay for gay-couple marriage benefits.
Rebuttal to Argument 3:
1. That’s such an unfair statement. Gay couples deserve to have the samelegal rights that protect other married couples.
