HISTORY.
From the Preclassic period the department of Santa Ana was inhabited for the mayan groups. That’s why you can find some archeological pleaces ñike Tazumal, Casa Blanca, representatives ofthis culture.
Fort he classic period the department was inhabite for two mayan grupos, the “CHORTIS” located in the north of the Lempa river; and also the “POKOMAMES” located in the south of the Lempariver, just except Sonsonate.
Chalchuapa was the the more powerful, dominant and biggest city throughout the western zone.
Between 1200 and 14oo, the department was inhabited for the “PIPILES”.Between 1528 and 1540 the zone was conquered for the spanish people.
During the spanish colonization Santa Ana belonged to the San Salvador’s Municipality.
During 1824, Santa Ana belonged toSonsonate. And in 1855 was created the department of Santa ana joined with Ahuachapan, but in 1869 was formed the actual department that we know.

Tazumal is a Pre-Columbian Maya archeological site in Chalchuapa, El Salvador.Tazumal means, "the place where the victims were burned," in K'iche'. The ruins of Tazumal are considered the most important and best preserved in El Salvador. The artifacts found at Tazumal provideevidence of ancient and active trade between Tazumal and places as far away as Panama and Mexico. The excavated ruins are part of an area covering 10 km² (4 sq mi), much of it buried under the surroundingtown. Archaeologists estimate that the first settlements in the area of Chalchuapa date to around 1200 BC.
