If your child experiences sensitivities from a sensory modulation disorder, tactile defensiveness, or displays discomfort from various sensations, the clinic or therapy sessions are not the onlyplace where your child can benefit from sensory integration techniques. There are many fun activities that you can engage in at home that will benefit your child.

Bath Time
* Having your childplay with foamy soaps and shaving cream to draw letters, numbers, words, and shapes on the bathtub walls is an alerting activity. Use various colored foams and liquids.
* Rags and sponges ofdifferent textures can be squeezed with your child’s hands until all the water comes out. You can add resistance for strengthening by using thicker sponges. Adding food coloring to the rag and having yourchild squeeze the towel until the water is clear is motivating and will increase you child’s attention to the task as well. Deep pressure and squeezing has an overall calming affect.
* Adding bathsalts and fizzy soap balls in the tub will add a different texture and pleasant scent to the water.
Baking and Cooking
* Your child can help in meal preparation by mixing different texturedingredients with their bare hands. The scents and tastes are a sensory experience. Encourage your child to try all types of food textures. Different foods can either be calming or alerting. Crunchy, spicy,and cold foods are alerting. Warm or soft textures are calming. Touching uncooked rice or pasta shells is alerting.
* Have your child smash grapes with their hands and bare feet to make grapejuice and have them squeeze lemons or other fruits so they may feel different kinds of liquid on their hands. Deep pressure activities like squeezing, stomping, or stirring very thick mixtures is calming.* Have your child wear a chef’s hat or oven mitts so they can feel various cloths/textures on their skin and hair.
