Lean has become a popular term in the manufacturing and supply chain arena. Japanese companies that adopted these philosophy twenty years ago has become the more productive an efficient firmsaround the world, showing signs of high quality products and the highest service levels of the market. There is an evident link between lean and elimination of waste; an event that catches firm’s attention and motivates them to adopt this successful approach. However, lean is not easy to implement; lean is not something that you can buy and ensemble, Lean require years of training and commitment.These work will exposes the most relevant features for Lean approach in the supply chain arena. Taking into account its evolution and tools that contribute to achieve Lean. Finally, there is an application of the Lean approach; exposing the most relevant activities and characteristics of the implementation of Lean.

Initial featuresThe iconic book “The machine that change the world” describe the Toyota system production and exposes the term Lean, a word that describe processes and philosophies adopted in the Japanese company (Liker, 2004). Lean manufacturing emerge from the Toyota production system after the II word war in Toyota Motor Company. The approach was created by Toyoda Kiichiro, who pursues the elimination ofwaste and suggested the pull system (Liker, 2004). However, lean cannot be reduced to the elimination of waste, Mr Ohno suggest that Lean is “Making a factory operate for the company just like the human body operates for an individual” (Ohno, 1988).
