The rarity of points and absence of other artifacts or signs of settlementsuggests the presence of small groups who made only infrequent visits to the province in the course of their movements. While there is no local evidence to suggest the settlement orsocial forms of Clovis groups, their dependence on prevailing migrations of mammoth herds must have involved movements overs long distances.
Beliefs: Clovis sites elsewhere give us someinsight into ritual and belief systems. In southern Ontario a cache of about 200 burnt chert implements were discovered in a pit which may represent the remains of a cremation burial.Territory: Despite the brevity of the culture (between 300-500 years), Clovis sites are found throughout the United States, northern Mexico and southern Canada. Very few largeClovis sites are known--the largest is the Gault site in Texas.
Lifestyles: The Clovis people were primarily, but not exclusively of course, big game hunters of megafauna, now extinctforms of large bodied animals like mammoth, bison, horse and camel, hunted using a highly mobile hunting strategy.
Environmental conditions at the time were dry, and it might bespeculated that the Americans took up big game hunting (from the mixed hunter-gatherer-fisher strategy of pre-clovis) as an adaptation to drought. But, for whatever reason the people startedhunting elephants and horses and bison, the big-game hunting strategy only lasted as long as there were big game to hunt.
Eating habits: Clovis diet; extinctbison, mastodon, sloths, tapir, palaeolama, horse (the association of Clovis with horse remains is in dispute as no actual Clovis artifacts have been found in direct association with fossil horse remains)
