“I want not to need a kneed” ! The Lorax is a metaphor for the voice of mother nature [the lorax takes ownership of the trees] warning us about the dangers of irrationally exploiting the planets resources. The world has an evolving balance that was slowly developed though natural selection, and the balance depends on adequatefood chains. Food chains are not only prays and predators but all the other elements that interact in an ecosystem. Humanity in its ever expanding mentality has disregarded natureʼs balance for so long that the systems it depends on are on fragile conditions. Most humans are alienated from nature and do not see the connections between them as individuals and the ecosystems that they live in. In aconsumerism era people want everything that the think they need, be it any type of good; Advertisers and profit maximizing companies are devoted to make everyone believe that you need more and more things. However needs don't change, on the other-hand wants do. What is a real need, is food security. And it is a need not only for humans but for all the living species of this planet. The irrationalindustrialization of the earth has altered the food security of many species that keep the balance of the earth. Today with technology we are able to see the impact that our practices of unmeasured consumption and waste have on the planet. However it is interesting to realize the practices and teachings of native american cultures are very environmentally conscious1 , without the need for expensiveand sophisticated research projects. Now that the signs of natural instability are undeniable we as humans have the duty to become more empathic with nature 2. We can no longer afford to be alienated from the earth; As humans we do require food, and shelter, and we like to create and develop, but now we have to keep a mindset that doesnʼt allow waste. In Eating Animals Jonathan Safran argues thatfactory farming should be illegal3 however it is not realistic to keep up with demand of food if this where the case, and then, the powerful and wealthy would be in a better position to have food security. Consumption has to be conscious of the origin and impact on the world that the product has. Vast amounts of food is wasted every year, and it doesn't matter if it gets composted it has alreadyhad a great impact on nature. With better education and a mindset of purchasing only what is needed the amount of waste can go down, also demand of factory farmed food would decrease and then we would be able to slowly eliminate factory farms. We all live in this earth and we need to re-grow our connections with her, if we want to be truly happy we need to have a healthy planet.

1. How does federalism affect the Canadian governmentʼs ability to address policy issues such as climate change? ! Due to the drastic differences in Canadaʼs territories federalism poses a great ability to address concerns of local matters. Climate change being an environmental issue is benefited by provincial legislation because it isprovided with comprehensive policies respective to the specific province. In other matters such as education having local governments decide the program generates discrepancies in the level of education across canada. Lack of communication and power struggles can benefit certain provinces over others while looking at federal policy. 2. Reflecting on the relationship between -meritocracy in- and -neutralityof the civil service and democracy-, what are the democratic implications, if any, of the current power dynamics operating within the federal government? !
