THE OTTAWA TRIBE
1. They were an Algonquian-speaking people.
2. The Ottawa location was in the Lower Peninsula the South West of Michigan near the northern shores of Lake Huron.
3."Ottawa" or "Odaawaa" comes from the Anishinaabe word, Adaawe, which means "to trade”. They traded with other tribes.
4. They were noted among their neighbors as intertribal traders and barterers,dealing "chiefly in corn, meal, sunflower oil, furs and skins, rugs and mats, tobacco, and medicinal roots and herbs.
5. The Ottawa language is considered one of several divergent dialects of theOjibwe language group. They spoke Nishnabemwin, and Daawaamwin.
6. Their economy was the farming, fishing, hunting and trading economy of the Ottawa resembled that of other Great Lakes people.7. The Ottawa, under Chief Pontiac, organized a pan-Aboriginal uprising against the English, who threatened to encroach on Aboriginal lands.
8. During the American Revolution and the War of 1812,the Ottawa sided with the British. After signing treaties in the 1820s and 1830s with the Americans, many Ottawa in Michigan moved to Manitoulin Island.
