Always hand-in-hand
Poverty and crime have a very intimate relationship which is described by experts from all boards.
The UN and the World Bank rank crime very high on the list of obstacles to acountry’s development.
This means that governments not only have to deal with poverty but also with crime as they try to develop the country.

Unemployment, poverty and crime

Starting from the70s, studies in the US pointed more and more at the link between unemployment, poverty and crime. After that other connections with income level, schooling, neighborhood quality, education, etc, wererevealed as well. Fresh research from the UK even indicates that economic cycles may affect variations in property and violent crimes. 

But most important of all, the unmistakable characteristic ofpoverty and crime is that they’re both geographically concentrated in the same areas. In other words, where you find poverty is also where you find crime. And this reveals the strong connection betweenthe two issues.

Poverty causes crime

In other countries, where the social discrimination factor was not that strong, results have shown that less education meant more offenses ranging fromproperty crime, “casual” theft, to drug-related offenses .( But not violence. It appears that in fact, poverty itself is more tied with violence, criminal damage and also drug use, as a catalyst forviolence.

So you can see here the huge consequences of that kind of research for public policy and the different impacts of keeping children in school and reducing poverty. Obviously it doesn’t seem toomuch a stretch to argue that having kids actually graduate from school will in itself contribute to reduce poverty, does it?
