The power of fear
Fear is one of the most influential things when making a decision, especially when your life is on the line, and it may lead you to do or say things you don’t want to when beingunder its control. Judge Hathorne, Abigail Williams, and Rev. Parris use fear as a control instrument.
In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, Judge Hathorne control people from Salem by making them fearhim. These actions help him on the witch trials because he manages to make people tell the truth. Judge Hathorne scares the people from Salem by always supporting Judge Danforth and Reverend Parris anddeliberating against the accused people, when they are judging he shouts, “This is contempt, sir, contempt!.” (pp 1139) and then again he tries to convince the court that Giles is lying by tellingthem, “This is contempt of the court, Mr. Danforth.” (pp 1142)
On the other hand Williams uses fear to contol not the people in court but the other girls, because they know Abigail from many years back,they believe every words she says and follow her as a leader, and when she threatens them telling them “…Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will3-2
come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you. And you know I can do it.” She also uses fear to control John Proctor to keep him fromaccusing her of dissembling by threatening him with accusing him of lechery and putting herself as the victim thinking he really loves her “...I will not, I cannot!, you loved me John Proctor, andwhatever sin it is, you love me yet!...” (pp 1110)
The other character that controls people is Reverend Parris because he doesn’t want them to think he is a bad Reverend and that he is not doing hisjob so he makes them believe there really is a devil loose in Salem saying things like “Cast the Devil out!
