CHAPTER 1
The scorpion bite.
It was not yet light when Kino woke up, the stars still shone. Kino’s eyes opened. Then he looked at the hanging box where coyotito slept. And last he turned his head to Juana, his wife. Juana eyes were opened andshe was looking back at Kino.
Juana quickly go to see to coyotito and she spoke soft words of love to her baby.
Juana told kino to take coyotito out of the box and cleaned him, when he was going to do it he saw a scorpion that was moving slowly down the rope toward the baby’s box. Kino tried to catch it, but it fells past his fingers, fells on the baby’s shoulder, landed, and bit. Then Kino tookthe scorpion, threw it to the floor, and killed it.
When Juana find the bit, it was already red, she put her mouth down to it and she tried to get the poison out, as coyotito screamed.
Kino and Juana go to see the doctor. Kino spoke to the servant in the old language, about the baby and the scorpion and asked to see the doctor, but the servant replied and goes with the doctor and explains whatwas going on and the doctor asked if they have money and the servant says they never have money, but the doctor said go asked them if they have money.
Kino took out a small piece of paper and inside of it had ugly shapeless gray pearls. The servant closes the door again but this time goes with them quickly and he said, the doctor is busy, and then he shut the gate.
CHAPTER 2
Kino finds thegreat pearl.
Coyotito’s shoulders still red. Juana went to the water and walked in. she picked some plants from the sea and placed them on the baby’s red shoulder. This was her people’s usual way with scorpion bit; probably it was as good as doctor’s medicine.
Now Kino and Juana pushed the canoe down the beach to the water. Juana climbed in, pushed it into deeper water and then got in, too. Thepearlers were already at work. Kino could see them. Their canoes were far out in the sea, above the oyster bed. Some pearls are small and worth little money, but a few are large and beautiful and white and expensive.
He took a rock in one hand and in the other a bag, he jumped into the sea but he moved slowly because he wants the water to stay clear so he can took the pearl and replaced in a rock.Chapter 3
Plans for the pearl
The news move fast, know almost everybody knows Kino found the pearl of the world. He only won enemies that want that pearl.
What Kino want to do with the pearl was help the church for any repairs it needs, get marry with Juana in a pretty church, he want his son go to the school and learn to read speak and go to leave to a city.
CHAPTER 4
The firstthief
The doctor go to see the baby and say sorry to Kino , because he wasn’t there , he was doing otrer thing but know he were there .
He said tha coyotito was better and he said ‘’ sometimes my friends the scorpion bit is a strange thing’’, ‘’ the patient will seem better’’ sometimes ( the doctor continued) there will be a bad leg or a bad eye or a bad back, and kino said that he know and he wouldmake it better. The doctor give thme something for the poison to attack it.
When the doctor was in his house the servant give him some chocolates, sweet cakes and fruit.
CHAPTER 5
Selling the pearl
That day Kino decided to sell the pearl so he could do his wishes and dreams.
It was an important day so Juana dressed coyotito with his best cloths, it was an important day for thefisherman and all of them were ready for that.
Kino was searching the best offer to sell the pearl but no one gives the money that was. So he go with other buyers but some of theme offer less than others, so he want to go to search more buyers to the capital or the city.
But Juana don’t want that because she thinks that money and that pearl will destroy her family in many ways.
