In the process of preparing students to become translators, I go through at least three stages: Analysis of the source language; careful study of the text; and the identification of the appropiate terminology in the target language. The first two stages involve foursteps: Analyzing surface structure; applying transformational rules; analyzing synthactic structure; and finally examining the semantic component. The last stage employs the same four steps but in reversed order.
En el proceso de formación de traductores, hay al menos tres etapas: análisis del idioma fuente, estudio cuidadoso del texto e identificación de la terminología apropiada en el idioma dedestino. There is a gap between the first two stages of translation and the third, namely, between thesource language and the target language. How do we bridge this grap? That’s the task of “transfer”. It serves at a hinge between the study of the deep structure of the source language and the appropiate restructuring of meaning within the target language.
Existe una brecha entre las dos primeras etapas de la traducción y la tercera, es decir, entre el idioma fuente y el de destino. ¿Cómo franquearla?Esa es la función de la “transferencia”. Transfer requieres a complete grasp of the linguistic structures of the two languages. Basic problems lie in the differents semantic, synthactic, and retorical systems of thelanguages. Therefore, in our rendering, it is necessary to make some changes in these structures of the target language. Since the difference in synthactic structures is self-evident, let us consider the semantic and rethorical elements in traslation.
La transferencia requiere una completa comprensión de las estructuras lingüísticas de los dos idiomas. Los problemas fundamentales radican en losdiferentes sistemas semánticos, sintácticos y retóricos de las lenguas. Por consiguiente, en esta interpretación es necesario efectuar algunos cambios en las estructuras del idioma objetivo. Puesto que la diferencia en las estructuras sintácticas es evidente, han de considerarse los elementos semánticos y retóricos de la traducción.

Over-differentationversus under differentation: One language may differentiate among certain ítems or events while the other may treat them as one, disregarding minor differences. For instance, in English, the Word orange referes to a kind of fruit. In cChinese, there are three different varieties of oranges, indicated by three distinct noun forms. In this case, English under-differentiates while chineseover-differentiates. The opposite may also happen as is the case with the following examples:
Diferenciación alta contra diferenciación baja: Una lengua puede tener diferencias entre ciertos temas o acontecimientos, mientras que la otra puede tratarlos como una sola, haciendo caso omiso de las diferencias de menor importancia. Se puede citar como ejemplo la palabra orange que en inglés se refiere a una clasede fruta: la naranja. En chino hay tres variedades diferentes de naranjas indicadas por tres formas diferentes de sustantivos. En este caso, el inglés usa menos diferenciaciones, mientras que el chino usa más.
También es posible que ocurra lo contrario, como en los siguientes ejemplos:
