DIDACTIC UNIT 1: WELCOME TO U.K.
DESCRIPTION:
The title of the didactic unit is Welcome to U.K . It is a didactic unit which introduces students to the main elements of English culture and icons. This unit will be developed in fifteen sessions and it will be sequenced from 15th September to 8th October approximately.
JUSTIFICATION
I have chosen this topic to this unit because I think thatthis is a great opportunity that in unit number one students can get an idea about U.K and its culture and later on can contrast its culture with their own and with other English spoken language countries.
The purpose of the unit is to get students involved with English culture and furthermore to get knowledge about the present tense and about some other grammatical aspects such as the pronouns oradverbs. Students will also develop his reading skills with some texts that also analyze the English culture. We will also pay attention to the writing skill with some writings where they have to deal with grammar points and with English culture so in a way writing, reading, grammar and listening and speaking are going to be linked with a central idea: English culture. We have to contextualize thisunit in the current legal frame RD 1631/2006, 29 December that established the minimums of compulsory secondary education and also our autonomic law D 127/ 2007 24 May that establish the Compulsory Secondary Education Curriculum in the Canary Island.
But of course we cannot forget the characteristics of our center when we approach the unit. The center is located in the town center and this, willhelp students to have a clearer image about the cities that we are going to work on the project of the unit than if it were located in a rural area. We are working with a group very homogenous but however it presents its particularities. It is present a repeater boy with fifteen years old. A boy of Irish origins who is almost bilingual is also present in the classroom. There are also some lowerstudents that present some problems with the contents and two advanced students who help me with the lower ones.
I try to educate students in values too because in each unit I approach them to cultural aspects on the English spoken countries. In this way they developed respect by other cultures and they have a more real view.
KEY COMPETENCES
It is obvious that as any other unit in our programthis is going to contribute to develop the competence on linguistic communication since English is a language subject. Furthermore with this unit we also work the social competence and education for citizenship since we work with the culture of U.K.
The competence of learning to learn is also worked as well as the competence on autonomy and entrepreneurship because students have to learndeductively and they have to make some research to do the project.
INNITIAL EVALUATION OF STUDENTS
It is necessary to do an initial evaluation of the students in the four skills, reading, writing, listening, and speaking and also a grammar test to see the position of the students in relation to the subject. I realized after doing it that students have a good level although some exceptions such as therepentant boy and some other lower students. There are also some students that present a more advanced level.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives that students have to achieve by the end of this unit are well known by them because I presented it to them at the beginning of the unit. The didactic objectives of this unit will be: to use the present simple and adverbs of frequency, to use the present simplevs the present continuous, to use the question forms and the possessive adjectives and pronouns. Regarding listening and speaking they must be able to guess the content of the unit by the title; they have to talk about their daily routines, they have to interact with their partners to speak about their families, they have to be able to describe people´s personality and physical appearance and...
