Why Do I Want To Become a Doctor?

I still recall the sound of the squeaky wheel chair approaching the door whilst I knocked. My Grandma, Sofia, opened the door with the most radiant smile on her face. This experience is the root ofmy admiration towards her; despite all her suffering she maintained her dignity and happiness. In life I strive to live by my Grandma's philosophy of life: to take advantage of every opportunity andlive life to the full. She was my idol and still is. At the age of 65 my Grandma was diagnosed with polyneuropathy and a few years later she became disabled, losing the ability to walk. As time passed,my Grandma started to gain weight as a consequence of the lack of exercise, which developed into diabetes type two. This serious condition affected her ability to heal as effectively as a healthyperson. At the time I was highly disappointed and I never understood why she was not able to get any home care from the health system? This is one of the biggest disadvantages of living in a rural area.Due to these neglecting circumstances she developed ulcers on her legs and back. Financially, it was hard to take my Grandma to hospital to take care of the ulcers. When it became possible it was toolate which caused the necessity of the amputation of both legs. Years later, my Grandma Sofia developed bladder cancer which worsened her condition. My passion for medicine was still present but Ialways asked myself, do I really want to become a doctor?

What upset me the most was the day I saw my Grandma die. No matter how much knowledge of biological sciences I had acquired through my years ofcollege, it could not explain the feeling in my heart. I was ill prepared for what I was going through. I was so confused at that moment because I had plans to change majors from a curriculum ofVeterinary to one of Human Medicine.
