Women From The 16Th Century - Romeo And Juliet
Things in the 16th Century were very different to nowadays in a lot of ways.
The education in the 16th Century hardly existed for women: they couldn’t go touniversity and most of them couldn’t even go to school; instead they were taught to run a household and look after babies. This happened because people thought men’s education was more important, becausethey needed to work and earn money to support the family, and that women should stay at home looking after the children and after the house. For example Lady Capulet doesn’t appear working in all theplay, which means she doesn’t have a job, she is only in charge of looking after Juliet, but as she has a lot of money she doesn’t have any problems.
Women grew up being controlled by their parents,especially by men. They were subservient to men and were dependent on their male relatives to support them. They were expected to obey the male members of their families without question. We can seethis in Romeo and Juliet when Juliet and her father discuss because Juliet doesn’t want to obey her father and marry Paris.
Women’s place in society was a lot inferior to men’s. Men were strong anddominant to the people’s view, and women were the weak gender. Normal women didn’t have any rights, and men had them all. Royal and important women did have some, but certainly not as much as men. We...
